Math – some random thoughts

I have been teaching mathematics for the past many years and one thing I always wondered as to why math is either liked by some or disliked by some and there are  few people who fall between these extremes. When I tried to understand this aspect the questions which came to my mind are ….

- Is it that creative people have an aversion for math?

- Is it that math has precise solutions and sometimes we do not want a precise yes or no for an answer?

- Are people who like math rationalists?

While there are no straight answers, it is something which definitely evokes our thought process.

Now let us see if we can do without knowing or understanding math.

The answer is “NO” because math is very much a part of our daily lives. Anything and Everything we do has a “Math Angle” Pun intended.

Be it getting up in the morning and checking the packet of milk delivered at our doorstep. Checking for the number of eggs in the refrigerator and the number of people who would be having eggs for breakfast. Getting into the car, auto or scooter to reach school and thinking about the distance and time and the fare. This can go on and on …

So, how many of us are aware of the way in which mathematics provides us with the reasoning to be able to praise the intrinsic beauty of nature?

beauty of nature

Mathematics is visible everywhere in nature, even insects use mathematics in their everyday life for existence. Snails make their shells, spiders design their webs, and bees build hexagonal combs.

The beauty of Mathematics is seen in the harmony, patterns, and structures of numbers and forms

After this real stuff let us see if math is fun and whether it evokes humor. Math doesn’t always have to be hard and confusing, sometimes it can be fun. These funny math jokes and puns are the perfect way to make math a good time. Recent studies have shown that laughter helps us to learn new things by reducing anxiety and boosting motivation, participation, perception, memory and attention

Though math is itself a unique subject but, you would be surprised to know that it forms the base for every subject. The subjects like physics, chemistry, economics, history, accountancy, statistics, in fact; every subject is based upon math.

Mathematics is mother of all the sciences. Just as a mother guides her kids in a right direction, Mathematics also guides all the sciences as well as non-sciences in a proper direction.

Thus to conclude I would like to say Math is a medium that should be embraced by everyone in all our walks of life.

  8. It's good to be the best in mathematics, but I feel taking all children together is essential, I am sure half of children might still are not confident on division sums...regret if it's slightly harsh, but it's feedback, thanks
